"Working together to skill the Peel Region"

Challenger TAFE, Peel Campus, Beaconsfield, Western Australia

The Peel region lies between Perth, the capital of Western Australia and Bunbury, a major regional city in the southwest of the state. Peel is Australia's fastest growing region with its population likely to double in the next ten years. Major investment is taking place in natural resources and infrastructure projects and, as a result, many businesses in the construction and engineering industries are looking for skilled employees.

Mandurah is the major centre in the Peel region and its community is well serviced by government and private providers of education and training. However, communities in the smaller regional centres surrounding Mandurah are not as well serviced and factors such as limited access to public transport, low indicators of life-long learning and limited disposable income prevent many people accessing education and training in Mandurah.
The aim of this project was to address skill shortages in Peel, by evaluating and developing delivery and assessment strategies, especially those that incorporate e-learning, to increase training opportunities for people in the smaller regional centres within the Peel region.
Underlying the project was a partnership between Challenger TAFE's Peel Campus, the Peel Development Commission, the four Community Learning Centres at Waroona, Serpentine Jarrahdale, Pinjarra and Boddington and representatives from the industries based in the Peel region.
